World Obesity Day: a new study published in The Lancet shows that the number of obese children and adolescents has risen tenfold over the last 40 years

News

An Imperial College (London) and World Health Organisation (WHO) study, to which the IUMSP contributed by providing data from the Seychelles and Switzerland, shows that the number of children with obesity has risen tenfold around the world during the last 40 years.

This study is published open access in The Lancet on World Obesity Day (11 October 2017). It analysed the weight and height data of around 130 million persons aged between 5 and 19 years, and of 97.4 million persons aged 20 and over.

It is the most comprehensive epidemiologic study carried out to this day, with more than 1000 contributing researchers. The measures carried out allowed the calculation of the study participants’s body mass index and of how obesity has changed worldwide from 1975 to 2016.
