WHO collaborating centre for population-based cardiovascular research and prevention in populations in transition

The IUMSP, notably its Chronic Diseases Division, has been designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre for population-based cardiovascular research and prevention in populations in transition. This designation is valid for the period 2015-2019 and follows a previous designation, which applied from 1993 to 2012.

The title Collaborating Centre was granted following a decision by the WHO's Director General, made jointly with the Swiss federal authorities. This title emphasizes expertise and experience in public health, and allows to provide technical support to the WHO's tasks.

Specifically, the joint agreement between the IUMSP and the WHO addresses the implementation of the WHO global action plan for the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases 2013-2020.

This designation acknowledges the IUMSP's expertise in cardiovascular diseases, which began with the IUMSP's participation in the MONICA multi-centre study in the 1980s and 90s.
The IUMSP then brought to light how chronic and degenerative diseases were emerging in low- and middle-income countries, notably through studies carried out in Tanzania and the Seychelles, and in evaluations of noncommunicable disease control programmes in other developing countries.

Terms of reference:
The terms of reference state that the IUMSP will share its expertise with WHO to:
1.    strengthen WHO's cardiovascular disease epidemiologic resources (via chronic diseases research and prevention projects in the Seychelles and elsewhere);
2.    evaluate chronic disease prevention programmes in countries experiencing health transition;
3.    provide temporary experts who can advise WHO on chronic diseases;
4.    contribute to the training of chronic disease prevention stakeholders in these countries, in particular via public health training.

For example, the IUMSP and WHO jointly organise an annual seminar on noncommunicable diseases and the 10th edition will take place in 2016 (NCD seminar). In addition, the IUMSP supports similar seminars held by WHO in low- and middle-income countries.
